Book Review by Kathryn Kitto, Business Mindset Coach, Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist
Book: “Super Mind” (2016) by Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D., Penguin Random House

“Super Mind is a wonderfully practical exploration of the benefits of Transcendental Meditation that reveals how the technique is not a belief or faith but a simple tool that, in my experience, can improve your life in ways you never thought possible.” – Hugh Jackman

Ok, so the fact that Hugh Jackman found this book inspiring did mean that I was a little more intrigued about this publication. But the fact remains this book is not only a great (detailed) handbook about how to find that quiet place within, but it also provides another pathway to develop our potential more fully.

Often in society, we come across a bit of an urban myth in the belief that if we keep working on whatever is on our screens and push ourselves to new successes, then we are at our most productive and more likely to fulfill our potential. However, this doesn’t account for the fact our brains are not equipped to be “on” all the time, and when our brains are busy, we can miss the really important internal messages that point us in the right direction. Not only this, but having quiet time through meditation actually opens our minds up to even more possibilities for success. This is what Rosenthal’s book details: “how to boost performance and live a richer and happier life through transcendental meditation”.

The book is divided into three parts, namely ‘Development of Consciousness’, ‘Gifts of the Super Mind’, and ‘Beyond the Super Mind’. Within the first part, Ronsenthal explains how Transcendental Meditation (TM) and the Super Mind are not just about relieving “the stress of the moment but to nurture the growth of consciousness and to improve the functioning of… mind and the overall quality of life” (p. 11). He also clarifies that developing a Super Mind is not about being without limitations, but rather about learning to live up to your potential.

Living up to your potential when you are striving to build a successful business online gives you an edge. It means that you are in flow with your life and your passion and purpose, and it feels fantastic. Of course then this feel-good vibe flows on to your target market or your tribe, which then has the flow on effect of an increase in business. So how do you get in touch with your potential?

Well, according to Ronsenthal, this is not about a secret key to enlightenment, but more about getting in touch with your own version of “being in the zone” and allowing transformation to take place to a higher level of functioning.

“Like everyone else, I’m a work in progress. However, unbeknownst to me, I’ve made significant gains along the axis of happiness and self-fulfillment. Over time it became clear to me that I meditate for much more than simply stress relief. I meditate also to sustain and advance the changes I have learned to associate with the Super Mind.” (p. 48)

So the longer and more regularly you meditate, the more quickly the Super Mind develops within you… it grows over time. To be more to the point, the combination of changes in consciousness due to meditation, being mindful about your own mindset, actions and “being in the zone”, in addition to transforming towards the higher potential within you, constitutes the Super Mind.

Ronsenthal also offers a questionnaire in the Appendix to help you work out far along you are in your journey towards your Super Mind and to bring to your consciousness exactly what your experiences are of meditation.
